T’puram: An experiential learning centre featuring a state-of-the-art science park and indoor laboratory was inaugurated at Govt Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thycaud, as part of efforts to transform the institution into an international-standard experiential learning hub.The project, developed by Thiruvananthapuram Smart City Ltd at a cost of over Rs 20 lakh, was inaugurated by transport minister C P John, who formally opened the science park by demonstrating the infinity mirror model. The minister said students should develop a genuine scientific temper and expressed hope that the new facility would inspire curiosity and hands-on learning.Designed around the Gandhian philosophy of ‘learning by doing’, the centre enables students to understand scientific concepts through observation, experimentation and practical activities rather than rote learning. The outdoor science park features around 40 interactive models covering concepts in physics, biology and geography, allowing students to conduct experiments in an open environment. The indoor experiential learning lab houses more than 70 science experiment kits and models aligned with the school curriculum, helping students explore topics such as Ohm’s Law, wave motion, reflection of light and mechanics through practical demonstrations. The laboratory also includes flexible seating, smart digital boards and creative learning zones to encourage collaborative learning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The initiative aims to strengthen students’ foundations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education while promoting innovation and teamwork.
