Jamshedpur: The Railways’ plan to build a road overbridge (ROB) and an underbridge at Barigora level crossing, and another ROB at Govindpur railway crossing on the city outskirts has triggered panic among residents and shopkeepers.Officials said nearly 100 houses and 80 shops will be affected. As part of the land clearance drive, railway authorities began issuing eviction notices on Thursday after a door-to-door survey to identify affected families. Where occupants were not available, notices were pasted on the walls of houses and shops. The notices ask residents to vacate railway land by Aug 12, while some have been given time till Aug 14.The sudden move has left many families worried about shelter and livelihood. Residents have urged the govt and railway administration to ensure proper rehabilitation before eviction, saying relocation during the monsoon would be extremely difficult, especially for families with children whose education could be disrupted.“Nobody is opposing the development work. All the affected people are asking for an adequate time to vacate their houses and shops after the monsoon,” said local resident and Zila Parishad member Kusum Purti. She said a delegation is likely to submit a memorandum to Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Mahato on Saturday, urging him to take up the matter with railway authorities.Deputy Mukhia Amresh Singh said that while the proposed underbridge is acceptable, the overbridge at Barigora will affect several families who have lived in the area for more than five decades.“We appeal to the railway administration to provide proper rehabilitation to the affected people,” said shopkeeper Ajay Gupta.Govindpur resident and Zila Parishad member Paritosh Singh said residents support the railway’s development projects but their concerns must be addressed.“People should be given reasonable time before eviction,” he said. The Railways plans to construct T-shaped ROBs to minimise displacement and speed up project execution. The project was first announced through a Railway Board notification on Feb 15, 2026. On April 22, 2026, the Chakradharpur Railway Division floated a Rs 193 crore tender for ROBs at Govindpur, Barigora and Kherbani level crossings.Divisional Railway spokesperson Aditya Choudhary said he would seek details from officials and confirm whether extending the eviction deadline is being considered.
