T’puram: Two passengers were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station on Wednesday morning. The escalator, which was moving upwards, suddenly stopped and began moving downwards, causing passengers to lose balance and fall.The injured were identified as Dhanya and Ambili, who had arrived on Vanchinad Exp. After receiving first aid at railway aid post, they were shifted to general hospital and later discharged.The incident occurred when passengers were using the escalator to reach Platform 1 from Platform 5. According to witnesses, the escalator made a loud noise before abruptly reversing direction. A major mishap was averted after a passenger pressed emergency switch and stopped the escalator. Passengers alleged that the railway staff failed to assist the injured.Initial assessment by railways suggests the malfunction may have been caused by overcrowding on escalator. TNN
