Garhwa: An elderly man was trampled to death and another injured by a herd of elephants at Chutru village under the the Ranka forest area of Garhwa district late Friday night. The herd also damaged four houses in the area.The deceased was identified as Mohan Manjhi (61). The injured Sardar Manjhi (40) is undergoing treatment at local clinic, said officials.Villagers said that the angry elephants might have attacked the village over the death of a female elephant, whose carcass was found from a water body located on the fringes of the village last Thursday.Garhwa (South division) DFO Ebin Benny Abraham said, “A partial payment of Rs 50,000 of the compensation has been paid to the deceased family and the remaining amount will be paid after receiving the complete report. The forest team is keeping a vigil in the area.”
