Stranded in slush: A wild elephant remains trapped in a muddy pond in Kannambadi village under Devarapura gram panchayat in Ponnampet taluk for two days

Madikeri: A wild elephant that had strayed into Kannambadi village under Devarapura gram panchayat in Ponnampet taluk and fallen into a farmer’s pond in a residential area has finally managed to climb out after being trapped for nearly two days.The elephant had been unable to escape because of the slippery ground around the pond and was heard trumpeting for help. Forest department officials, led by Virajpet Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Jagannath, had been monitoring the situation and exploring ways to rescue the animal. However, the jumbo managed to free itself from the pond on its own.Jumbo caracass foundMeanwhile, workers found a wild elephant carcass in a coffee plantation in Naladi village under the Kakkabbe gram panchayat limits. Villagers suspect the elephant may have died two days ago.Villagers said the elephant had been destroying plantations in the area for many years. Forest department officials visited the spot.
