Chandigarh: The safety of Chandigarh’s new electric buses came under scrutiny on Saturday morning when two wheels of a moving bus detached near Sector 46/47. The vehicle was travelling from Ramdarbar towards Maloya with around 15 passengers on board. The driver managed to control the bus and bring it to a halt by the roadside, preventing a serious accident. No injuries were reported. Eyewitnesses said the bus was moving at normal speed when a loud noise was heard and the wheels came off. They added that a major accident could have occurred had the bus been at high speed or had the driver failed to act swiftly. The incident also posed risks to other vehicles on the busy road. Observers said the situation could have been far more dangerous under different circumstances.Earlier this week, the UT administrator held a meeting with officials on inducting more electric buses to strengthen public transport. Authorities had announced that services would be available every 15 minutes on major routes, aiming to reduce private vehicle use and curb pollution.
