Udupi: In a successful case of family reunion, Rangamma,62, who was found in a helpless condition in Udupi about a month ago, was reunited with her family through the coordinated efforts of police and Senior Citizens’ Helpline.Personnel from the Udupi Women’s police station rescued her and admitted her to the Sakhi Centre, Nittur, for temporary shelter. When officials from the Senior Citizens’ Helpline visited the Sakhi Centre and interacted with her, she identified herself as Rangamma. She informed them that she had two children and provided details of her residence. She reportedly claimed that she had not been in contact with her children for two years.

She was shifted to Hosabelaku Ashram on the instructions of the district disabled welfare officer, until her relatives could be traced. The process was facilitated by Roshan K, project coordinator, and Nayana, counsellor, from the Senior Citizens’ Helpline.The Senior Citizens’ Helpline then requested Udupi Town police station to trace her family members. Based on the address provided by the woman, ASI Vijay and police constable Hanumanthappa Vibhuti from the Udupi Town police station travelled to Telangana, conducted an inquiry, and successfully traced her son. He was subsequently brought to Udupi.At the helpline centre, her son was counselled about the provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, and was advised about his legal responsibility to care for his mother with dignity and respect. Responding positively, he assured the officials that he would take proper care of his mother and ensure that such a situation would never arise again.Following the counselling, she was discharged from Hosabelaku and reunited with her son on Friday. The legal formalities in the case were completed, police said.SP Hariram Shankar guided the team along with police inspector Mahesh Prasad. ASI Vijay and police constable Hanumanthappa Vibhuti of the Udupi Town police station provided valuable assistance in tracing Rangamma’s family. The cooperation of Tanula Tarun, director of Hosabelaku, also played a crucial role in the successful rehabilitation and reunion, police said.
