Coimbatore: A 65-year-old man succumbed to severe head injuries on Tuesday night, a day after he was assaulted and pushed by his grandson during a heated family dispute at his residence near Annur in Coimbatore district.The deceased has been identified as Palani, 65, of Ponneygoundenpudur. On Wednesday, police arrested the victim’s grandson, identified as Boopathy, 20, from Hallimoyar in the Nilgiris district;According to the police, the incident took place on the night of June 1, when Boopathy was visiting his grandfather’s house. Police said a verbal altercation broke out between the two, after Palani reportedly made derogatory remarks about Boopathy’s mother. The argument quickly escalated and Boopathy assaulted his grandfather with a wooden stick and pushed him forcefully. Palani lost his balance and fell heavily against a stone, sustaining a critical head injury.Neighbours who heard the commotion, intervened, prompting Boopathy to flee the scene. Palani was rushed to the Govt Hospital in Annur for preliminary treatment and later shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.Boopathy was booked under section 105 of BNS (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). He was produced before the judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
