Pune: A 79-year-old woman from Kamshet lost Rs 8 lakh after a cybercrook convinced her to share confidential banking details between Oct 8 and 9.The fraudster posed as an assistant manager of the Karve Road branch of a public sector bank. The woman lodged a complaint with Kamshet police on Saturday. An officer from the Kamshet police said the complainant and her husband are retired and live in a Kamshet housing society. On Oct 8, the woman searched on the internet for her husband’s bank customer care number. She had noticed that no transactions were taking place in his pension account.“When she called a number she found on the internet, the receiver identified himself as an assistant manager at the bank’s Karve Road branch. He assured her that he would resolve the issue within 24 hours and asked for details of her husband’s pension account,” the officer said. The officer said the fraudster subsequently obtained the account numbers of the woman’s bank account and her husband’s two bank accounts, along with their debit card details and OTPs.“On Oct 9, the woman received another call from the fake assistant manager, who sought further account details. She became suspicious and contacted a relative in Pune, who visited the bank’s Karve Road branch to verify the person’s identity. The bank informed that relative of the woman that no such assistant manager was employed there,” the officer said. The officer said the woman then checked the bank accounts and discovered that Rs 8 lakh had been transferred from the three accounts – Rs 7.5 lakh from her account and Rs 50,000 from the two accounts of her husband.“We have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. We have sought the transaction details from the banks of the complainant and her husband,” the officer said.
