Hazaribag: An elderly couple was found dead at home in Babu Para village of Hazaribag district on Monday. The deceased were identified as 80-year-old Wakil Ram and his 60-year-old wife, Jhunia Devi. The couple lived alone in their ancestral house.The man had married thrice and left behind seven children. All his wives are dead.

According to villagers, the couple was cordial and had no known enmity with anyone. The incident came to light when locals noticed unusual silence in the house in the morning.On entering the premises, they found the couple lying dead inside. Wakil Ram was physically challenged, said a local source.Police did not find signs of major ransacking or struggle inside the house, making the case more mysterious. There were no visible indications of forced entry, which indicate that the assailant may have been someone known to the family or familiar with their routine, said police sources. “Everything looked almost normal inside the house,” a resident said.Barkagaon police station officer-in-charge Krishna Kumar Gupta, along with a team, cordoned off the area. DSP Pawan Kumar also visited the village to supervise the investigation. “The bodies were sent to Sadar hospital for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death,” said Gupta.So far, police have recovered a blood-stained axe and clothes from the house of one of the couple’s relatives.Their son, Ramvilas Das, who is a school teacher and lives in town area, away from the village, claimed that his mother’s gold earrings are missing, police said.“We are examining the case from all angles. It would not be appropriate to make any statement at this stage. Important clues were collected from the spot, and technical evidence is also being analysed,” Gupta said, adding that forensic experts were also called to gather evidence from the crime scene.The villagers told the police that a theft had occurred in the house a couple of days ago in which jewellery and cash worth Rs 90,000 were stolen. A case was also lodged in Barkagaon police station but so far no arrests have been made in this connection.
