Berhampur: An elderly couple was found dead in their house at Kalasuta village under Gangapur police station limits in Ganjam district on Saturday, four days after the marriage of their daughter. The deceased were identified as Simanchal Bisoi (66), a farm labourer, and his wife Namita Bisoi (61). Police suspect the couple died by suicide, possibly due to debt burden or a family dispute.According to police, the couple was found hanging from a rope tied to a hook in the roof. Villagers and relatives rushed to the house and alerted police. “After receiving the information, we reached the spot and found the couple lying on the floor. Villagers told us they were found hanging from the same rope,” said Bana Bihari Pradhan, inspector in-charge of Gangapur police station. The exact cause behind the deaths is yet to be ascertained. “We have registered two cases of unnatural death and launched an investigation from multiple angles,” Pradhan said, adding that debt burden or family dispute could not be ruled out.During preliminary inquiry, police found that Namita was Simanchal’s second wife, whom he married several years ago after the death of his first wife. From his first marriage, Simanchal had four daughters, all of whom are married. The couple had two children—a son and a daughter—from the second marriage. Their son, who was working in Hyderabad, had died earlier due to ailments. Their youngest daughter’s marriage was held on Tuesday at Singipur.Police said on Friday, Simanchal, along with some relatives, went to his newly-wed daughter’s house to offer fish and vegetables as part of post-marriage customs. After returning, the relatives left for their respective villages, while the couple stayed back at home. They were found dead the next morning.
