Kanpur: Eight schoolchildren were injured after a speeding private school van carrying more kids than its capacity lost control and overturned on Thana Marg in the Rajpur police station area of Kanpur Dehat on Monday morning. Three of the injured were referred to the Medical College, while the driver abandoned the van and fled.According to police, about 19 children — more than the vehicle’s seating capacity — were travelling in the van.The van, belonging to an educational institution located on Thana Marg, was carrying children from Kamalpur village at around 7.45 am. As it reached near Jainpur village in Atal Nagar, the vehicle went out of control and overturned on the roadside. The children started screaming after the vehicle overturned. Hearing the noise, villagers rushed to the spot, rescued the trapped children and took them to hospital.Those injured were identified as Aditya (9), Aditi (11) and Deepti (10), residents of Kamalpur, and Nancy (9), Ayansh (6), Divyansh (4), Jahnavi (4) and Kanhaiya Pal (8), residents of Satti. All the injured were initially taken to the Primary Health Centre.Due to a serious head injury, Kanhaiya’s family shifted him to a private hospital in Akbarpur. Meanwhile, PHC doctor Manoj Sarraf, after providing primary treatment, referred Aditi, Nancy and Ayansh to the Medical College.Rajpur police station in-charge Surya Pratap Singh said a search is on for the van driver, who fled after the accident. He added that the matter is under investigation and strict action will be taken as per rules.
