Shillong: Eid-al-Fitr was celebrated with religious fervour and joy on Saturday, as the Muslim faithful offered namaz at mosques and idgahs across Meghalaya, exchanging greetings and sweets.The iconic Madina Masjid — popularly known as the ‘glass mosque’ — in Laban locality was abuzz with worshippers and visitors from diverse faiths, who admired its serene beauty. Rising 120 feet beside the gurgling Umshyrpi stream, the mosque is regarded as the first and only glass mosque in the country.

The mosque features a separate enclosure for women, and also houses an orphanage and a library. While prayers were offered at the adjoining idgah, several tourists thronged the premises to witness the grand glass structure, which was splendidly illuminated in the evening for Eid.Large congregations also marked the festival at idgahs in Laban, Fire Brigade, Police Bazar, and other localities of the capital city. Scenic spots, hotels, restaurants, and eateries across Shillong and beyond bustled with Eid revellers, while streets overflowed with people and vehicles in celebratory mood.True to Shillong’s cosmopolitan character, residents from all sections of society joined the festivities, exchanging greetings and sharing in the joy of the occasion. Reports of peaceful and joyous celebrations came in from across the state, including the Garo Hills region, which has a sizeable Muslim population.Extending greetings on social media, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Sending warm wishes of peace, joy, and prosperity to all celebrating Eid. May this special occasion bring you and your loved ones happiness and blessings. #EidAlFitr #EidMubarak.”
