Chennai: A pond in the Government Museum campus at Egmore, which had been poorly maintained for a long time, has been restored and opened for public use.On Wednesday, school education minister Rajmohan inaugurated and inspected the renovated pond, about 750m from the museum building, following which he planted a sapling. Museum director D Baskarapandian, Chennai collector S Malathi Helen and other officials were present.The ₹63.04 lakh project was taken up under the ‘Iconic Chennai’ initiative. It involved desilting the pond, removing weeds and strengthening its banks. Visitor amenities, including a walkway, safety railings, stone retaining walls, protective walls, stone benches and information boards, have been provided. The water inlet area was restored and the surrounding areas were landscaped.The project is aimed at conserving the waterbody within the museum campus and creating a safer and more accessible environment for visitors and the public. Storm water drains were earlier linked to a pond to prevent waterlogging during rain.
