A drunk man allegedly assaulted a police constable near a temple in Thane

THANE: A drunk man allegedly assaulted a police constable and attempted to stab him during a late-night incident in Maharashtra’s Thane district.The incident took place around 1.30am on Sunday near a temple in the Gauripada area of Kalyan West, news agency PTI reported.According to police, a woman called the Khadakpada police station alleging that her relative, Rahul Ravindra Tayde, 37, a resident of Shree Lakshmi Building, was threatening her family while knocking on her door with a stick.Constable Ganesh Chavan, who was on night patrol duty, reached the spot in response to the complaint.Police said Tayde allegedly attacked the constable, struck him on the head with a stick, pushed him against a wall and tore his uniform, PTI reported.As local residents gathered to intervene, Tayde allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to escape in his car.A police official said, “He was boasting that he had powerful contacts. Tayde attempted to stab Chavan when the constable tried to block his car.”“Chavan managed to duck in time and escape from the knife attack. Tayde fled, and a manhunt has been launched for him,” an official added.A case has been registered against Tayde under charges of assault, obstructing a public servant from discharging official duty, criminal intimidation and other relevant offences, police said.(With agency inputs)
