Kendrapada: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her 32-year-old alcoholic husband in Jagatsinghpur district’s Balarampur village on Saturday night after she refused to give him Rs 5,000 received under the Odisha govt’s Subhadra Yojana to buy liquor, police said on Sunday. The accused, Digambar Swain, has been arrested.Digambar allegedly returned home drunk and demanded the money from his wife, Puspalata Swain. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her with a spear in a fit of rage. The injured Puspalata was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Jagatsinghpur, where doctors declared her dead. The couple has a 9-year-old son.After allegedly killing his wife, Digambar attempted to take his own life by hanging himself from a ceiling hook. His mother and son intervened and alerted neighbours, police said. Digambar’s mother Manorama Swain (62) said Puspalata received the Subhadra Yojana assistance six days earlier. Digambar had since been repeatedly demanding the money to buy liquor, she said. “He quarrelled with his wife on Saturday night and asked her to give him the money. But she flatly refused, following which my son killed her,” she said. Police have recovered the body and sent it to the district headquarters hospital in Jagatsinghpur for autopsy, said IIC of Jagatsinghpur police station Susant Kumar Sahoo.
