Imphal: Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday said the 2023 crisis in the state altered drug trafficking routes, with smugglers increasingly using Mizoram, while smaller consignments continue to be routed from Moreh to Churachandpur.Speaking at the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the City Convention Centre here, Singh said most trafficking has now been diverted through Mizoram. However, he added that smaller quantities are still transported from Moreh to Churachandpur, allegedly using roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).Referring to a recent interaction with civil society organisations in Kwakta, the chief minister said local representatives told him nearly 70% of the area’s youth were affected by drug abuse. He also alleged that peddlers often supply narcotics on credit, making them more accessible.Singh said sports can play a key role in prevention, adding that his own involvement in sports during his youth kept him away from drugs. He urged young people to take up sporting activities.Calling for a united fight against drug abuse, Singh said building a drug-free society requires collective efforts from govt agencies, local clubs, Meira Paibis, civil society organisations and the public.Earlier in the day, the chief minister flagged off a 10-km Mega Awareness Run from the Western Gate of Kangla, organised as part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, under the theme “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses”.Manipur DGP Mukesh Singh said the fight against drugs is not only the responsibility of the police but requires the participation of the entire population.
