Acting on specific information that Saif was selling narcotic substances to customers near a footwear shop on Tilak Road in Abids at around 2 pm, the H-NEW team laid a trap in the area. The team spotted Saif arriving at the location in a blue hatchback.A customer arrived shortly afterwards, got into the car, collected a packet from Saif and got out. Soon after, H-NEW inspector K Srikanth and his team approached Saif and asked him to pull over.On the pretext of parking the vehicle by the roadside, Saif began reversing the car. As he failed to stop, H-NEW constables Mahender Yadav and Vamshidhar moved behind the vehicle to prevent him from escaping.“While reversing, the rear tyre ran over Mahender Yadav’s left foot, causing him to fall on the road. Saif then immediately drove the vehicle forward, once again running over the constable’s leg before fleeing the scene. Constable Vamshidhar sustained an injury to his hand while attempting to stop the speeding car. Mahender suffered a fracture to his left leg and has been admitted to hospital. Vamshidhar was discharged after receiving outpatient treatment,” an H-NEW official said. Two H-NEW motorcycles parked near the car were also damaged when Saif’s vehicle collided with them.Inspector Srikanth and his team immediately began chasing Saif in a police vehicle. Near Grand Hotel in Afzalgunj, Saif’s car collided with a sedan, but he continued driving. At the Afzalgunj bus stop, the police team overtook his vehicle and blocked his path. The accused then attempted to ram his car into inspector Srikanth, who was trying to stop him.“I quickly moved aside and fell on the road. I suffered minor injuries. The accused managed to escape in his car,” inspector K Srikanth stated in his complaint to the Afzalgunj police. However, senior police officials later confirmed that Saif, who has no previous criminal record, was apprehended nearby and taken into custody. He is currently being interrogated by H-NEW officials.H-NEW DCP Vaibhav Gaikwad said all the injured police personnel are out of danger. The Abids and Afzalgunj police have registered separate cases under Section 109 (attempt to murder) and other relevant provisions of the BNS based on complaints lodged by the injured constables and the inspector.
