Pune: A driver charred to death after his car crashed into the railings of a flyover and caught fire in Kamshet on Mumbai-Pune highway, about 50km from the city, in the early hours of Tuesday.The Kamshet police identified the deceased as Ketan Chavan (34) from Pimpri. The car was heading towards Pune.Assistant inspector Akash Pawar, the in charge of Kamshet police station, said the accident occurred around 1.30am. “The car driver might have lost control of the wheel and the vehicle crashed into the median before hitting the railings of the flyover. The car immediately caught fire. Chavan could not come out of it,” he said.Pawar said the fire engulfed the entire car within seconds. After getting the information, a police team and the Vadgaon fire brigade personnel reached the spot, the officer said.Leading fireman Tahir Momin of the Vadgaon fire brigade said his team doused the fire within 15 minutes. “We found the driver’s charred body inside the car,” Momin said.Assistant police inspector Pawar said the accident caused traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Pune highway. The traffic movement resumed after the firemen doused the fire.“We traced the deceased driver’s identity with the help of the car’s registration number. Chavan’s family members identified him. We will record their statements after a few days,” Pawar said.
