Nagpur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nagpur Regional Unit under Mumbai Zonal Unit, this week busted a wildlife trafficking syndicate operating in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a suspect in Srikakulam city and rescued four Malabar Giant Squirrels (Ratufa indica), one Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans), and fourteen Jungle Fowl. Following leads, the team proceeded to a remote location in Rayakurdi village, around 60 kilometres from Srikakulam.Despite challenging terrain, complete absence of electricity, and no mobile network connectivity, officers continued the operation and rescued two Small Indian Civet (Viverricula indica) babies.Malabar Giant Squirrel, Small Indian Civet, and Indian Star Tortoise — are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which provides the highest level of legal protection by prohibiting hunting, possession, transport, and trade, said an official.The recovered wildlife and the apprehended individual were seized and handed over to the Forest Department, Srikakulam.“These species are highly sought after in the exotic pet trade and by wildlife collectors, driving illegal trafficking networks that severely threaten biodiversity and the survival of these creatures in their natural habitats,” said a source.
