Hyderabad: A 25-year-old tenant farmer and his 20-year-old wife were found dead at a mango grove in Sangareddy district on Friday. Police have registered cases under provisions related to dowry death and suspicious death, suspecting that the farmer had been harassing his wife for a motorcycle as dowry.The deceased were identified as Dasari Anjaiah, 25, a resident of Marepally village in Kondapur mandal, and his wife Yadamma, 20, from Sanjeevraopet village in Narayankhed mandal. The couple had married 11 months ago.Anjaiah had recently leased a mango grove in Marepally and was living there with Yadamma, his mother, and his younger brother. The family has been eking out a livelihood by selling mangoes.According to Kondapur circle inspector N Suman Kumar, Anjaiah had developed an alcohol addiction and had recently begun demanding that his in-laws purchase a two-wheeler for him. “The in-laws requested two months to fulfil the demand,” the officer said.On Friday morning, Anjaiah’s mother left for Sadashivpet to sell mangoes, while his 16-year-old brother went to the village. When the teenager returned in the afternoon, he found Anjaiah hanging from a mango tree and Yadamma lying dead inside their room with a stole tied around her neck.“The boy rushed to the village and informed the sarpanch, who alerted the police. We suspect that Yadamma may have died by suicide due to harassment, or that Anjaiah may have strangled her during an argument. Anjaiah appears to have died by suicide after Yadamma’s death,” the CI said.Based on a complaint filed by Yadamma’s father, Sailu, Kondapur police registered a case under Sections 80 (dowry death) of the BNS and 194 (suspicious death) of the BNSS.Following postmortem examinations, the bodies were handed over to family members on Saturday. “We will change the case from dowry death to murder if the postmortem findings indicate homicide,” the CI added.
