Kanpur: A fast-track court in Kanpur on Saturday convicted a man and his parents in a dowry death case and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the convicts.The court observed that the accused, Sanjay Nishad and his parents, Ram Pal and Gomti, would have to undergo an additional two months of imprisonment if they failed to pay the fine. The period they had already spent in jail during the trial would be adjusted against their sentence, the presiding officer said.According to additional district govt counsel ,Jitendra Kumar Pandey, the FIR in the case was lodged by the woman’s maternal uncle, Virendra Kumar, at Cantonment police station.In his complaint, he alleged that his niece Priya was married to Sanjay Nishad on March 12, 2019. He said her in-laws were not satisfied with the gifts and dowry given at the time of marriage and had been demanding a car and Rs 3 lakh in cash.According to the FIR, Priya called her uncle on June 26, 2020, at around 6 pm and informed him that her in-laws were thrashing her over dowry demands.He alleged that the next day, her in-laws informed him about Priya’s death. When her family reached the in-laws’ house, they found her body hanging from the roof.During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses to substantiate its case.Based on the evidence presented before it, the court convicted Sanjay Nishad and his parents and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
