Ahmedabad: The civic body has completed the first phase of its stray dog census, counting 6,640 animals across six wards — four in the east and two in the west. Isanpur recorded the highest number of stray dogs at 2,344, while Danilimda had the lowest at 456.Of the other wards surveyed, Behrampura recorded 1,237, Paldi 1,070, Naranpura 981, and Khokhra 552.The exercise, which began on April 4, forms part of a larger survey that will cover all 48 wards of the city over the next 10 months. The survey costs Rs 62,000 per ward and is expected to help the civic body plan sterilisation drives and achieve its target of making Ahmedabad rabies-free by 2030.AMC data shows that of the 6,640 dogs counted, 3,945 are males and 2,078 are females.

The survey also recorded 27 lactating females and 92 puppies. Officials identified 317 unsterilised male dogs and 167 unsterilised female dogs during the exercise. The civic body has so far microchipped 7,952 stray dogs across the city.AMC data shows it sterilised almost 2 lakh stray dogs between 2019-20 and 2026-27 for Rs 19.1 crore. A random survey conducted in 2019 had estimated Ahmedabad’s stray dog population at around 2.1 lakh.Officials said more than 80% of the city’s stray dogs have now been sterilised, leading to a visible decline in the number of puppies. Areas that earlier reported six to seven puppies now typically see only two or three, they said. During the census, teams are also identifying unsterilised dogs so they can be sterilised later. The census comes even as animal bite cases have risen sharply. Between Jan and March 2026, Ahmedabad recorded 24,203 dog bite cases, up 20.3% from 20,115 cases during the same period in 2025. In a year, dog bite cases rose from 7,453 to 8,354 this Jan, from 6,278 to 7,753 in Feb, and from 6,384 to 8,186 in March.Cat bite cases increased by 155.7%, while monkey bite cases rose by 44.7% during the same period.AMC is also registering pet dogs. So far, 17,226 owners have registered 19,582 pet dogs across the city. The highest registrations have come from West Zone with 4,950 dogs, followed by North West Zone with 4,070, East Zone with 2,828, South West Zone with 2,617, South Zone with 2,356, North Zone with 1,985, and Central Zone with 776.
