Bhubaneswar: Doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) saved a man’s leg from a possible amputation by performing a below-knee advanced endovascular atherectomy using Jetstream technology, hospital officials said.The procedure was carried out on Tuesday by Dr Sambit Kumar Pattanayak, consultant in interventional radiology. SUMUM said the intervention marked a significant step forward in minimally invasive vascular care.According to Dr Pattanayak, the patient had severe blockage in the arteries of the leg, a condition that can become limb-threatening if circulation is not restored in time. He said such blockages can lead to non-healing ulcers, gangrene and eventual loss of the limb.Patients with critical limb ischaemia often face limited treatment options, particularly when the obstruction is located in smaller arteries below the knee. Dr Pattanayak said advanced atherectomy devices allow doctors to remove plaque and clots and improve blood flow without open surgery, helping reduce the risk of amputation.He added that the minimally invasive approach can lower pain, shorten hospital stay and speed up recovery, while improving limb-salvage outcomes.Dr Biraj Mohan Mishra, chief of medical services at SUMUM, said the successful use of the technique signalled a new phase in limb-saving treatment in Odisha and could benefit patients with advanced peripheral artery disease and critical limb ischaemia.Manojranjan Nayak, founder President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University and SUM Ultimate Medicare, said the introduction of below-knee endovascular atherectomy reflected the institution’s focus on advanced, patient-centric care aimed at saving lives and limbs.
