Pune: Indian Medical Association (IMA) Maharashtra has sought an urgent review of promotional videos and the trailer of Hindi film ‘Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak’ starring Sunny Deol, alleging they generalise corruption in the medical profession and glorify violence against healthcare workers. In an Oct 22 letter to Union information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, IMA national president Dr Anilkumar J Nayak sought an “impartial review” and corrective measures from the filmmakers. The IMA later issued a statement on Friday stating the promotional material appears to justify physical assaults on doctors, nurses and hospital staff as heroic. Dr Santosh Kulkarni, president of the Maharashtra IMA chapter, said, “Such content can risk normalising violence against healthcare workers who are already serving under severe workplace safety challenges.”The doctors’ body also objected to the generalised portrayal of corruption and unethical practices, which it said was misrepresenting individual wrongdoings as characteristic of the entire profession. Such negative and sensationalised portrayals damage the sacred doctor-patient relationship, creating unwarranted mistrust and hindering smooth healthcare delivery. “Portraying medical workers as targets of violence and mistrust demoralises medical students and discourages young aspirants from entering the noble profession,” the letter concludes.IMA Maharashtra backed demands of the national body for a review, corrective action, including cuts or a legally justified ban, and safeguards against such violence.
