Jammu, July 25: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) JDN J&K has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a second-year postgraduate resident at SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, and called for swift action in the matter.
In a statement, the association said the resident doctor was allegedly slapped by a patient’s attendant while on duty. It also expressed concern over the reported response of the Medical Superintendent, who was alleged to have remarked, “If you can’t tolerate this, who told you to join Gynae?”
The association said that, if accurately reported, such remarks were deeply disappointing and did not reflect the institutional support and solidarity that healthcare professionals deserve.
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan has urged the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the incident. He reiterated that violence against healthcare professionals is unacceptable and undermines the safety, dignity and morale of doctors dedicated to patient care.
The IMA JDN J&K expressed solidarity with the resident doctor and stressed that attacks on healthcare professionals cannot be tolerated. It called upon the authorities to ensure accountability and strengthen security measures in hospitals.
The association said resident doctors, who work under immense pressure to serve the public, must be provided with a safe, secure and supportive working environment. It called for a fair, transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident, swift action against those found responsible, and immediate measures to strengthen security across healthcare institutions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Dr Khan and IMA JDN J&K further urged the concerned authorities to address the matter with the utmost urgency and reaffirm their commitment to protecting healthcare workers, ensuring that doctors can perform their professional duties without fear of violence, intimidation or harassment.
