Lucknow: A Lucknow-based doctor was duped of nearly ₹65 lakh in a ‘pig butchering’ cyber fraud after scammers used a fake marriage proposal to lure him into a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme. The case marks the second such scam reported in Lucknow.According to an FIR registered at the Lucknow cybercrime police station, the doctor came into contact with a woman identifying herself as Amaya Gupta through Facebook in Feb 2025. Claiming to be a resident of Jamshedpur and owner of a women’s garment manufacturing unit, she built a relationship with him over WhatsApp. She also expressed her desire to marry him.Later, she introduced him to a man named Nitish, whom she described as a cryptocurrency trading expert.

Acting on their advice, the doctor initially invested ₹10,000 on a platform, which showed some profits.The fraudsters then encouraged him to invest larger sums. Police said the victim was repeatedly directed to buy USDT cryptocurrency through Binance and transfer it to the trading platform. He was subsequently asked to deposit additional amounts under various heads, including trading contracts, commissions, security verification and withdrawal processing charges.To enhance credibility, the scammers added him to a WhatsApp trading group where another woman appeared to be investing successfully. As the displayed profits increased, they demanded nearly ₹30 lakh as commission, promising that his investment and returns would be released after completion of the trading contract.Trusting them, the doctor sold investments, took bank loans and borrowed money from relatives and friends. Between Mar and Jul 2025, he transferred around ₹65 lakh into multiple bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.When he threatened to approach the police, the so-called mentor dismissed him, while the woman deleted her WhatsApp account and vanished. Police have registered a case.
