New Delhi: Delhi Metro is set to add 15 new interchange stations, of which five would be triple-interchange hubs. This will happen as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is laying eight new corridors under its phase IV and phase V(A) expansion plans.Currently, DMRC has 31 interchange stations, including two on the Aqua Line (Noida-Greater Noida) and Rapid Metro (Gurgaon). It includes the network’s only triple-interchange station at Kashmere Gate. Once the ongoing projects are completed, the number of interchange stations will increase to 46. The Magenta Line will have 22 interchange stations, the highest in any line. The Blue and Pink lines with 15 and 14, respectively.

The new triple-interchange stations will be New Delhi, Inderlok, Lajpat Nagar, Central Secretariat and Azadpur. At the New Delhi station, the Yellow Line meets Airport Express Line. It will also be connected to the Magenta Line. Inderlok is an interchange station between the Red and Green Lines, and will be linked to Magenta. Lajpat Nagar will emerge as the junction for the Violet, Pink and Golden Lines, while Azadpur will link the Yellow, Pink and the new corridor of the Magenta Line. Central Secretariat will become a three-line interchange linking the Yellow, Violet and the upcoming Magenta corridor.The remaining interchange stations to come up under the Phase IV expansion are Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Chirag Delhi, Saket G block, Chhatarpur, Tughlakabad, Peeragarhi, Madhuban Chowk, Pulbangash, RK Ashram Marg and Nabi Karim.Two additional interchange stations — Delhi Aerocity and Terminal 1 IGI Airport — will also improve connectivity to IGI airport.Shivaji Stadium and Kalindi Kunj will turn into interchange stations after the addition of the Phase V(A) corridors.“The expansion and addition of new interchanges are expected to strengthen Delhi metro’s role as the backbone of public transport in NCR,” said a DMRC official.TOI had reported earlier that an analysis by DMRC of passenger journeys from Oct 2023 to March 2024 had found that the majority of the commuters use the first metro line to transfer to other lines daily. It found that of the total number of passengers entering or boarding a particular line, around 20-30%, use it to complete their journey on the same line. However, the remaining 70-80% transfer or interchange to other lines to reach their destination.DMRC is currently constructing five corridors as part of its Phase IV expansion. These include Krishna Park Extension to Deepali Chowk and Inderlok to Indraprastha routes, which are extensions of the Magenta Line. The construction of two corridors of the Golden Line — Delhi Aerocity to Tughalakabad and another from Saket G block to Lajpat Nagar — are under way. Rithala-Kundli, an extension of Red Line, is also progressing.As part of Phase V(A), DMRC will add three corridors: Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj and Aerocity to Terminal 1, which are extensions of the Golden Line, and RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, which is an addition to Magenta Line.DMRC’s total network is now 416km with 303 stations, including the Noida-Greater Noida Aqua Line and Gurgaon Rapid Metro.
