New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday accepted the DMK’s request for a separate seating arrangement in the House, formalising the party’s split from the Congress benches and underscoring the widening rift within the INDIA bloc.

The development comes within a month of the Congress parting ways with the DMK and aligning with the Vijay-led TVK in Tamil Nadu.

In response, DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi had written to the Speaker seeking a separate seating arrangement for her party’s MPs.

The rift erupted after the Congress, despite contesting the Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, extended support to actor-politician Vijay’s TVK and became part of the new state government. The decision effectively ended the DMK-Congress partnership in Tamil Nadu.

The Congress won only five Assembly seats but backed the TVK in government formation, a move that triggered sharp criticism from the DMK. Senior DMK leaders described the Congress’ decision as a ‘betrayal’ and ‘backstabbing’ by an ally.
The Congress has defended its stand, arguing that political circumstances had changed and pointing out that the DMK had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on its own.
