Chennai: Senior functionaries cutting across party lines came down hard on BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran for his remarks linking TVK president Vijay with an actor. DMK women MPs Thamizhachi Thangapandian and Kanimozhi N V N Somu, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran, and TVK organisation secretary K A Sengottaiyan criticised Nagenthran for not pursuing civilised politics.Thamizhachi said on X that Nainar, being the state president of the ruling party in Delhi, should refrain from making derogatory remarks about women in public life. “Speaking of and treating women with dignity is what constitutes civilised politics,” Thamizhachi said.
Kanimozhi said Nainar’s remarks were “indecent”, especially when the woman was not involved in politics. She questioned the silence of BJP women functionaries on the issue. Selvaperunthagai told reporters in Chennai that he had no idea what Nainar said, but that the state BJP chief should avoid making such remarks against women. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam condemned Nainar, saying that such remarks against women are unwarranted. Dhinakaran, who recently joined AIADMK-led NDA in Tamil Nadu, told reporters in Madurai that personal attacks have no place in a healthy democracy. “Personal criticism should be avoided by everyone. Nainar Nagenthran is generally not someone who speaks this way; avoiding personal attacks is essential for healthy politics,” Dhinakaran said. Sengottaiyan told reporters in Erode, “Nainar is not even a person, and the BJP is not even a party.”
