Dhanbad: In preparation for the scheduled visit of President Droupadi Murmu on August 1, the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) has launched an extensive encroachment drive across various city roads. The drive began under the directive of deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan, with strict instructions to all departments to expedite cleanliness, beautification, and road clearance efforts. Departments have been instructed to submit progress reports on a regular basis.Leading the operation, DMC officer Anil Kumar said, “Eviction and encroachment drives will continue until all roads are completely cleared of illegal structures. Roadside stalls, unauthorised shops, and other encroachments will be removed within a couple of days.”Kumar added that while some vendors and shopkeepers complied with evacuation notices and voluntarily dismantled their structures, those who resisted the directive were evicted forcefully under police supervision. As part of the drive, municipal workers dismantled tin sheds, makeshift stalls, banners, and other temporary structures occupying public space. Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order during the operation and prevent resistance from shopkeepers.Murmu is scheduled to arrive in Dhanbad to participate in the convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology – Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM) on August 1. “The announcement for evacuation had already been made. The drive will continue until complete clearance is achieved,” Kumar reiterated. The drive is part of a broader beautification and security initiative to prepare the city for the president’s visit, officials said.
