Guwahati: Karnataka deputy CM and Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Sunday said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was trying to play at an emotional angle on the Bangladeshi issue in Assam, while the Congress-led govt played the main role in creating Bangladesh to safeguard India.Addressing an election campaign meeting here for Congress’s Dispur candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami, he said Congress-led govts have always been committed to protecting the country and its borders. “Your chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, always speaks about Bangladeshis. We created Bangladesh to safeguard India. You just refer to history and the numbers; he is trying to play emotional. Now, he is trying to say that he is going to throw out all Bangladeshis,” he added.Shivakumar said Amit Shah’s prediction of a two-thirds majority for NDA in Assam would be proven wrong. “We assure you BJP will get one-third and Congress will get a two-thirds majority,” he said.In Dispur, Goswami is contesting against BJP’s Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently switched over to BJP. Taking a jibe at Bordoloi, Shivakumar said he (Bordoloi) was the man behind preparing Congress’s chargesheet against the Himanta govt and should reply to the charges if Himanta does not.“Sarma could not present answers to the chargesheet. I want to ask him to reply to the people on the chargesheet prepared by thier candidate, or let Bordoloi answer to this chargesheet, which he himself prepared,” Shivakumar added. He said Congress believes in inclusive politics for youth, women and all sections of society. He said when Congress comes to power, all caste, creed and religion will enjoy the power and privilege of the Congress govt.Shivakumar alleged that BJP’s initial poll promise in the last Assam election was 1 lakh employment opportunities per year. “This govt could not give even 10% of the promised jobs. BJP could not give any guarantee to tea garden workers, and they are struggling for dignified wages. Why could the double-engine govt not give Scheduled Tribe status to six communities of Assam?” he questioned. From MGNREGA to healthcare schemes and the right to food, Shivakumar said only Congress can bring historic schemes for all.
