Times News NetworkChandigarh: The district court rejected the bail application of the main accused, Neeraj Gupta alias Chaska, arrested in the Surjeet Bouncer murder case that occurred around six years ago. The accused was in judicial custody for nearly three years. After hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution, the court stated that, given the serious nature of the case, bail cannot be granted at this stage. The defence counsel argued in court that the accused had been in jail for a long time and charges had not been framed against him yet. Since the trial will take more time, he should be granted bail. However, the govt lawyer strongly opposed this, raising the issue of the crime’s severity and potential influence on witnesses. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application. Following the order, the accused will remain in jail for now, while the trial proceedings in the case continue. On March 16, 2020, unknown assailants opened indiscriminate fire on Surjeet’s car near Sector 38 West Chowk. Surjeet died on the spot. It took investigating agencies a long time to reach the main accused. Subsequently, police arrested Neeraj Gupta alias Chaska in Nov 2022. At that time, he was lodged in Nabha jail in another case. Chandigarh Police brought him on a production warrant. During interrogation, it was claimed that several important clues related to the murder case were found. Another accused in the case was arrested in 2023. MSID:: 128308134 413 |
