Nagpur: Repeated warnings failed to restore order in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) general body meeting on Wednesday. Mayor Neeta Thakre and the ruling side signalled strict action against nearly half a dozen corporators for indiscipline and continuous disruption of proceedings.Despite clear rules, corporators were seen bringing relatives into the House, while some even allowed individuals to shoot social media reels during proceedings. Frequent disruptions during question hour and debates derailed discussions, with several members speaking without permission and ignoring procedural norms. Both treasury and opposition benches were found violating rules, often interrupting speeches and turning debates into platforms for allegations and rhetoric. The situation escalated during a discussion on illegal hoardings, when relatives accompanying ruling party corporators began recording reels inside the House. Taking serious note, mayor Thakre ordered them to leave immediately. Some individuals from the opposition camp were also seen exiting following her directions. On Wednesday, the mayor issued a stern warning, directing corporators to ensure that relatives and unauthorised persons are kept outside, failing which strict action would follow. The proceedings also exposed a lack of coordination between the mayor and ruling party leadership. During debates on issues like illegal markets, garbage vehicle operations and hoardings, corporators repeatedly spoke out of turn without raising proper points of order. Interruptions were frequent even during speeches by the mayor, ruling party leader and opposition leader.A motion raised by corporator Pintu Jhalke saw confusion, as the ruling party leader sought to defer discussion, but the mayor proceeded immediately, highlighting internal discord. Similarly, discussions veered off track, with unrelated issues like stray cattle being clubbed into other debates. Congress corporator Abhijit Jha was also seen digressing and levelling corruption allegations without documentary evidence regarding the Bhandewadi dumping yard.Admitting the breakdown of discipline, mayor Thakre said adherence to rules remains poor despite repeated briefings. “We have issued warnings, but if corporators fail to comply, strict action is the only option left,” she said. Ruling party leader Narendra Borkar echoed the stance, stating that corporators disrupting proceedings could face suspension for two to three general body meetings.
