Bhubaneswar: The state govt has decided to introduce a digital verification system at the Puri Jagannath Temple to ensure special access for local residents, addressing their long‑standing demand.Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, speaking on the sidelines of his review of Rath Yatra preparations in Puri on Tuesday, said the state-run Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) has been tasked with developing the technology.“A gadget will be installed that can scan identity proofs and recognise local PIN codes. This will ensure only genuine residents of Puri avail the special entry facility. We will launch it soon,” the minister said.Harichandan stressed that the electronic system would prevent misuse. “The facility will be available only to locals with valid identity proof. If they come accompanied by relatives whose identity cards show addresses outside Puri, the gadget will deny access,” Harichandan said. The announcement was welcomed by residents who have repeatedly highlighted the difficulties they face during darshan, particularly at peak hours. Delegations of locals had earlier submitted memorandums to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Harichandan, demanding a streamlined entry path.Citizens complain of long queues outside the temple for security checks, followed by another round of waiting inside before darshan. The new digital system, officials said, is aimed at easing this burden and ensuring locals are not disadvantaged in their own city.“Even though all four gates were reopened by the govt in June 2024, the darshan system was not streamlined. Visitors from outside face hardship, but locals suffer the most. Until two years ago, we could enter quickly through the western gate, but that was discontinued,” said Bibudha Swain, a local resident. “We demand a dedicated darshan facility for Puri residents.”
