The DM informed that the first phase of the census will focus on house listing and enumeration of households from May 22 to June 20, 2026. The second phase, scheduled for Feb 2027, will involve the actual population count.Census 2027 will be the country’s 16th census and the eighth since independence. It is regarded as the most comprehensive and reliable source of primary data at village, city and ward levels. Singh highlighted that this census will be entirely digital, with self-enumeration being introduced for the first time.During the self-enumeration window, residents can log on to the official Census Self-Enumeration Portal and fill out an online questionnaire. For registration, citizens need to select their state, enter the name of the head of the household and provide a valid 10-digit mobile number for OTP verification. Only one family can be registered per mobile number.Users can choose their preferred language, provide details such as district, PIN code and locality, and mark their residence on a digital map. After reviewing the entered information, they can submit the form and receive a unique 11-digit registration number via mobile or email. When enumerators visit households, residents will be required to present this registration number for verification. In case of discrepancies, officials will re-collect the information.During the house-listing phase, surveyors will gather 33 types of details, including building usage, construction materials, number of rooms, ownership status, availability of basic amenities such as water, electricity and toilets, type of cooking fuel and ownership of assets like phones, vehicles and televisions.Appealing to residents, Singh urged citizens to actively participate in the process and complete self-enumeration in large numbers between May 7 and May 21 to ensure the success of Census 2027.
