Kolkata: Theme-based celebrations, traditionally associated with large community pujas, are increasingly becoming a feature of housing complexes. At South Winds housing complex on Southern Bypass, this year’s puja theme, Pixel to Puthi, explores how mobile phones have displaced reading habits across generations. “We often criticise the youngsters for moving away from books. But our theme will show this is not just a problem among them; adults across age groups are equally caught in this cycle. Since children emulate their elders, they, too, cannot escape it,” said Indranil Acharya, a senior member of the residents’ welfare association (RWA).At Sunrise Symphony in New Town, the theme is Mobile Phones and Digital Screens: The New Asura. “We want to send a message against excessive screen use and encourage children to reconnect with artwork. Children from our complex are participating in the pandal decoration and theme-related work. From alpana to traditional designs, they have taken the lead,” said Y Sudhakar, president of the Utsav Samity. At Siddha Pines in Rajarhat, this year’s theme is The Saga of Chalchitra. “Through this theme, we hope to revive a fading heritage by showcasing the evolution, artistry and stories of chalchitra. We want to introduce this art form to the younger generation so that they can learn, appreciate and carry forward its cultural legacy,” said Manav Mehra, RWA functionary. At Sanjeeva Town in New Town, the theme is Mayer Anchole Biswa Shanti, it conveys a message of global peace. “Our pandal will be shaped like a globe and covered with a large saree aanchal to symbolise global peace. Underprivileged children whom members of our society teach will inaugurate the puja. A grandparents’ walk will also be organised on Panchami,” said Joyeeta Maiti, secretary of the Durga Puja committee. At South City, the celebrations are centred on the birth centenary of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. Musical performances and dance dramas have been taking place within the complex since Mahalaya and will continue throughout the puja, said Manoj Gupta, RWA member.
