OpenAI is working on hardware devices that will be powered by ChatGPT but was this ad teasing one of its products?

The Super Bowl 2026 did have OpenAI ad but not the one you think.

The latest Super Bowl 2026 ad had a surprising addition in the form of an AI device called Dime which immediately got people excited because this was supposed to be OpenAI’s big ticket launch in the hardware market. The sporting event’s half-time break has gone viral over the years for different reasons and it feels like OpenAI is using the medium for its own hype-building exercise.

The device, a wireless earbud, and the name Dime were the obvious hints about the big reveal. But as it turns out, the whole product had a different focus and not from Sam Altman and Co.

The Dime Earbuds Video Leak: What’s The Story

It all started with a Reddit post which claimed about an ad that OpenAI had made for its rumoured ‘Dime’ earbuds that are expected to launch soon. The ads show off the earbuds which are supposed to have AI powers and sit in the ears to do its job.

The post has been deleted from Reddit and OpenAI was forced to respond to the rumours about the device and tell the world if what everyone saw was the real deal. Greg Brockman, cofounder and president, OpenAI shared the update via a post on X, where he said, “fake news.”

So was the product ad fake or the whole device and its name was sourced by someone else just to push the OpenAI agenda and get people excited? The AI company doesn’t say anything on these aspects but Super Bowl clearly was the ideal platform to showcase something this big but it seems OpenAI doesn’t feel the same.

OpenAI is said to be working on audio-related devices which could either be your regular earbuds or something more unconventional but a new report suggests it could start off the journey with the former later this year.

The details sourced via China hint at OpenAI going for a more safer product until it can have the premium option ready to handle the daily grunt and also make it available at a nominal price.
