Chandrapur: Former Maharashtra minister and Ballarpur MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar urged the Chandrapur superintendent of police to initiate an investigation into the alleged non-payment of deposits by Nirmal Ujjwal Credit Co-operative Society’s Chandrapur branch, warning that the savings of thousands of depositors are at stake.In a representation submitted to the police, Mungantiwar forwarded a complaint by depositor Sanjay Jhade and others, alleging that the society has failed to return matured fixed deposits, recurring deposits, and savings account balances for the past three months.According to the complaint, nearly 2,000 to 3,000 residents of Chandrapur have invested their lifetime savings with the co-operative society. Depositors visiting the branch for repayment are reportedly being told that the institution has no funds available.Mungantiwar said the situation has created widespread anxiety among depositors, many of whom depend on these savings for their financial security. He noted that the society’s head office is in Nagpur and claimed that several complaints regarding its functioning have surfaced in recent months.Seeking urgent intervention, the MLA requested the police to coordinate with the concerned authorities, conduct a comprehensive investigation into the society’s financial transactions and initiate appropriate legal action, wherever warranted, to safeguard the interests of depositors and ensure the early release of their money.Copies of the representation have also been sent to the assistant registrar of Co-operative Societies, police inspectors of Chandrapur City, Padoli and Ballarpur police stations, and the Nagpur Police Commissioner.BOXHundreds queue outside the Chandrapur branchThe anxiety of depositors intensified after the co-operative society reportedly stopped accepting fresh fixed deposits and renewing existing ones from May 1. Although the restriction came into effect months ago, it became widely known only recently, prompting hundreds of depositors to queue outside the Chandrapur branch to withdraw matured deposits and, in many cases, seek premature withdrawal of their savings.
