Rourkela: A 25-year-old man climbed a 60-ft mobile network tower at Barkote in Deogarh district on Wednesday and threatened to end his life unless a woman he claimed to be his wife was reunited with him. It took personnel from Barkote police station and fire services seven hours to rescue Laba Naik, a resident of Jhumapura village under Barkote police limits.He took the step allegedly after the woman’s family members took her away from his house on Wednesday afternoon. According to the locals, Naik had brought the woman home on Raksha Bandhan, claiming they were in love.Police said Naik climbed the roadside tower around 4.30 pm and refused to come down despite repeated appeals from family members and officials. After hours of persuading him to descend didn’t yield results, six fire personnel went atop and brought down the man.He was taken to hospital for medical examination. “After medical examination, he will be handed over to his family. We will conduct an inquiry into it,” said S Badhei, inspector in charge of Barkote.A large crowd had gathered near the tower.
