Buxar: Political functionaries, social activists and intellectuals from across the country gathered in Buxar on Sunday evening to mark the birth centenary of former PM Chandra Shekhar and urged the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on him posthumously.The speakers said Chandra Shekhar’s contribution to democracy, socialism, social justice and nation-building merited the country’s highest civilian honour.The programme was chaired by Kunwar Kamlesh Singh, a close associate of the late PM, while Shashank Shekhar conducted the event. National convener Arun Srivastava stressed the need to acquaint the younger generation with Chandra Shekhar’s ideals and his lifelong commitment to democracy and inclusive development.Former ministers Ramashankar Singh and B R Patil, farmer activist Sunilam, UP PCF chairperson Valmiki Tripathi, Bihar minister Sanjay Singh Tiger, Buxar MP Sudhakar Singh and several others described Chandra Shekhar as a principled politician who stood for democratic values, social harmony and the welfare of farmers.
