New Delhi: Delhi govt will formally request Haryana govt to hand it over control of the ITO barrage on the Yamuna river to bolster the city’s flood management, officials said on Wednesday. When the flood hit the national capital in 2023, one of the factors contributing to it was several dysfunctional gates of the barrage.A govt official said that the gates at the barrage had been repaired to prevent any flood-like situation and authorities concerned were monitoring them. Irrigation and flood control minister Parvesh Verma is likely to take the matter up with Haryana soon, the official added. In the past too, Delhi govt has written to Haryana to hand over the critical barrage.Irrigation and flood control minister Parvesh Verma said, “The ITO barrage is vital to Delhi’s flood control. In 2023, its malfunctioning gates worsened the crisis. While repairs have been made, Delhi needs full control to act swiftly in emergencies. We will formally request Haryana govt to hand over the barrage to us.”In 2023, there was flooding in parts of ITO and Ring Road after five sluice gates of the barrage got jammed and stopped working.
