New Delhi: Delhi will step up enforcement on its borders with neighbouring NCR districts to prevent non-compliant buses from entering the city, divert heavy vehicles not bound for the capital and crack down on polluting vehicles, which may be impounded and penalised. These measures were discussed at a virtual meeting held by Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa with police and traffic officials from Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonipat and Bahadurgarh Sunday. The measures are all for air pollution control. The meeting focused on strengthening inter-state coordination and ensuring effective implementation of pollution-control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan. Delhi Traffic Police told the meeting that enforcement had been intensified and over 10,000 challans were being issued daily.Enforcement against overaged diesel and petrol vehicles will also be strengthened in accordance with the orders of the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court. There will be strict enforcement of Pollution Under Control (PUC) norms. Visibly polluting vehicles will be stopped. These may be impounded and maximum permissible penalties may be imposed. It was decided that traffic management at congestion-prone stretches, particularly near the borders, will also be strengthened. “Traffic movement will be synchronised and adequate personnel will be deployed at busy corridors,” Sirsa said.Buses operating in Delhi-NCR from cities and towns outside Delhi will have to comply with the applicable fuel and emission standards. The transport department and other agencies will ensure that prominent banners, display boards and public information material are there at border checkpoints to inform motorists and interstate transport operators.
