NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police crime branch on Thursday registered an FIR into the July 20 CJP protest to investigate people behind the violence, police sources told news agency PTI.Police officials on Wednesday also denied permission for the CJP’s proposed protest on October 10, which has been called against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.On July 20, the protesters, gathered on the appeal of the CJP, were marching towards Parliament when the situation turned tensed as demonstrators attempted to move towards Parliament and breach police barricades in central Delhi, security personnel used tear gas and lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.Several videos subsequently circulated on social media, purportedly showing protesters being manhandled by police personnel, leading to allegations of excessive use of force.The Delhi Police, however, defended its action and maintained that force was used only after sections of the protesting crowd allegedly turned violent and engaged in stone-pelting.In the incident more than 118 police personnel injured, including senior officers such as the Special Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of Police.Several women police personnel were also injured. Around 60 protesters were reportedly hurt during the clashes.Later, the Supreme Court announced it will be setting up a committee to examine allegations of excessive use of force by security personnel against students during the July 20 student march. The top court also said that a five-member panel will be headed by former SC judge Justice R Subhash Reddy.Meanwhile,

The development comes ahead of the CJP’s October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar against the CEC.CJP and student organisations have called for a united mobilisation, with Das urging people from across the country to join what he described as a prolonged agitation.CJP has been demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and raising objections over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
