Guwahati: Suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed on Tuesday joined Raijor Dal a day after three-time Congress MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal joined the regional party.Ahmed, also a three-time MLA from Baghbor, announced he would seek nomination from Mandia constituency in the upcoming assembly elections.
Ahmed, A former govt official, was first elected to the assembly in 2011 as an AIUDF candidate. After being expelled from the party, he joined the Congress and successfully retained the Baghbor seat in both 2016 and 2021.However, in Oct 2021, he was suspended from Congress for “repeatedly violating party discipline.” Prior to the suspension, he had also been arrested over allegedly making “provocative” remarks against an eviction drive in Darrang district that Sept.The defections are not limited to Raijor Dal. Congress MLA Siddique Ahmed and AIUDF legislators Nizamuddin Choudhury and Karimuddin Barbhuiya are widely speculated to be preparing to join NDA partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). If confirmed, these shifts would further weaken the Congress-AIUDF bloc and bolster the BJP-led alliance’s prospects.
