Chandigarh: A veteran Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officer of Punjabi origin known for his anti-gang youth advocacy has been charged with nine criminal offences, including fraud, theft, and breach of trust, in connection with alleged offences dating back to 2017, Canadian media reported.Kalwinder “Kal” Dosanjh, 50, faces four counts of fraud over 5,000 Canadian dollars, four counts of theft over 5,000 Canadian dollars and one count of breach of trust by a public officer.Media reports said Dosanjh was arrested on Thursday as the VPD announced that it would hold a news conference on Friday to provide details of a two-and-a-half-year covert investigation led by superintendent Mike Ritchie.Plainclothes and uniformed officers searched his residence and removed boxes of documents. A co-accused, Sarabjit Singh Gill, 51, faces six counts of fraud and theft. Court records indicate the alleged offences occurred between Dec 2017 and July 2025 in Vancouver, Surrey, and surrounding areas.Dosanjh’s legal team, Alliance Lawyers, rejected the allegations. “Dosanjh has committed no crime and is innocent of any wrongdoing. An arrest, or a report that an arrest has occurred, is not evidence of guilt, misconduct or criminal responsibility,” the firm said in a statement.A VPD veteran of over 25 years, Dosanjh has worked in financial crimes, drug enforcement and undercover operations. In 2015, he founded the KidsPlay Youth Foundation, a Surrey-based non-profit offering sports and mentorship programs to steer youth away from gangs and drugs.Dosanjh has received numerous honours for his community work, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal, and recognition from the BC Achievement Foundation.
