Dame Penelope Keith, the acclaimed British actress best known for her iconic roles in the classic 1970s sitcoms ‘The Good Life’ and ‘To the Manor Born’, passed away at the age of 86. Her family announced on Monday that she “passed away peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey”, where she had resided for more than fifty years.According to the BBC, Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth paid tribute to the much-loved actress, reflecting on her remarkable career and lasting impact on British television and theatre. In his statement, Brandreth highlighted the significance of Keith’s most famous roles and her broader achievements as a performer.

Brandreth spoke eloquently about Keith’s legacy and the distinctive quality she brought to her work. “She was hugely popular, and she was blessed really with doing something that’s given to very few actors or actresses. In her lifetime she created a character that has entered almost the mythology. And she had a good life too,” he said.The broadcaster also addressed a common misconception about Keith’s persona, noting that while audiences knew her best for her comedic characters, she was a far more versatile and grounded person in reality. “But she wasn’t really like those characters; she could be like those characters. There was something in her manner that was like that, but as a person, she was very funny, very down to earth, very real,” Brandreth explained.

Brandreth emphasised Keith’s serious theatrical credentials alongside her comedy work. “She wanted to be a straight actress; she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, and she was a straight actress as well. We remember her for the comic roles because nobody did them better, but she also did Shakespeare, Bernard Shaw, Noel Coward, Sheridan, you name it. She did the greats as well,” he said.In his Instagram post, Brandreth offered a personal perspective on Keith as both a professional and a human being. “She was such a special lady – a wonderful actress, a real friend, so funny, so generous with the time she gave to good causes. Hers was indeed a good life,” he concluded.

Keith became a household name for her portrayal of the snobbish suburban neighbour Margo Leadbetter in ‘The Good Life’, which aired from 1975. Her performance earned her the BAFTA TV award for best light entertainment performance in 1977. She subsequently achieved equal fame playing the widowed aristocrat Audrey Forbes-Hamilton in ‘To the Manor Born’.The final episode of ‘To the Manor Born’ in 1979 achieved a viewing figure of almost 24 million, making it the highest audience for any non-live event on British television during that decade. The series cemented Keith’s status as one of the country’s most celebrated comedic actresses.
