Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district has 120 vacant posts in its home guards unit, with the department managing to recruit about 24 personnel over the past 10 months despite efforts to recruit personnel, said additional SP and district commandant of home guards Anil Kumar S Bhoomraddi. He said the sanctioned strength of Home Guards in the district is 800, but 120 positions remain unfilled.Responding to a query raised at the SC/ST grievances meeting held at the city police commissioner’s office on Sunday, on extending PF and ESI benefits to home guards, the additional SP clarified that the home guards is a voluntary auxiliary force. As members are engaged on a daily wage basis, they are not eligible for PF or ESI benefits.

He said home guards deployed with police department receive an honorarium of Rs 800 per day, while those assigned to other departments are paid Rs 500 per day. Individuals aged 19 years and above, who have passed their SSLC, and are physically fit, are eligible for the Home Guards and render service.
