Patna: A joint operation by the Cyber Crime and Security Unit (CCSU), Bihar, and the Patna Cyber Police Station has exposed an organised cyberfraud racket operating from the state capital. One accused has been arrested, while two of his associates remain absconding. Police have also seized several electronic devices and digital evidence linked to cyberfraud.The action was initiated after the CCSU analysed complaints received through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). During the investigation, officials scrutinised a mobile number mentioned in one of the complaints, which led them to a location in Patna’s Jakkanpur area. A raid was conducted, resulting in the arrest of Shubham Kumar.

Investigators examined the mobile phone recovered from the accused and found multiple mobile numbers, email IDs and other digital evidence. Technical analysis revealed links to 43 cyberfraud complaints registered on the NCRP from different parts of the country.Police identified two more alleged members of the gang—Shivam Kumar and Akash Kumar—who are currently absconding. Raids are underway to trace and arrest them, officials said.According to the preliminary investigation, the accused targeted unsuspecting people by impersonating relatives, friends or acquaintances over phone calls. They allegedly created fake emergency situations, such as illness or accidents, and persuaded victims to transfer Rs10,000 to Rs12,000 immediately through UPI IDs or bank accounts. Investigators said the gang relied on social engineering techniques to deceive victims and obtain money.The recovered digital evidence has also helped investigators identify several NCRP complaints registered in different states. Police are now examining the gang’s bank accounts, financial transactions and money trail to identify other members and beneficiaries of the fraud network.“An FIR has been registered at the Patna Cyber Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000. The seized electronic devices will be sent for forensic examination as the investigation continues,” officials said.
