Nagpur: A 61-year-old retired woman from Koradi was allegedly duped of around Rs24 lakh by online fraudsters who befriended her on social media and promised an Eid gift from UK. One of the fraudsters posed as a CBI officer, said police.As per the complaint lodged at Cyber Police Station, the senior citizen received a friend request from a person named Aryan on social media on May 21. After she accepted it, the accused gradually gained her trust through chats.The fraudsters claimed she was being sent a gift from UK for Eid, but the parcel was held up at Mumbai airport. The fraudsters introduced themselves as CBI officer Sunil and others. They repeatedly demanded various taxes, clearance charges and courier fees.The accused sent multiple QR codes and bank account details on WhatsApp and forced the victim to transfer money in instalments, totalling around Rs24 lakh between early August and August 20. No gift ever arrived.Police have registered a case under sections 66(a) and 66(d) of the Information Technology Act along with others against Aryan, fake CBI officer Sunil, Vishal and Rakesh of a private courier service.
